Keeping staffers under criminal investigation employed and rigging a primary election process to the favor of the party-anointed candidate is certainly enough to make the list of “worst ethics violators.” 

The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) released its list of “top 5 ethics violators of 2017.” At the top of the list (second only to the unnamed members of Congress linked to the fresher- and ongoing- sexual harassment scandal) is US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.).

DOJ agreees not to prosecute Imran Awan for House cybersecurity and theft, but questions remain

In September 2016, the House Office of Inspector General gave House leaders a presentation that alleged that Alvi, Imran, brothers Abid Awan and Jamal Awan, and a friend were logging into the servers of members who had previously fired him and funneling data off the network. It said evidence “suggests steps are being taken to conceal their activity” and that their behavior mirrored a “classic method for insiders to exfiltrate data from an organization.” 

Server logs show, it said, that Awan family members made “unauthorized access” to congressional servers in violation of House rules by logging into the servers of members who they didn’t work for.

The presentation especially found problems on one server, that of the House Democratic Caucus, an entity chaired at the time by then-Rep. Xavier Becerra of California. 

On Feb. 3, 2017, Paul Irving, the House’s top law enforcement officer, wrote in a letter to the Committee on House Administration that soon after it became evidence, the server went “missing.” 

The letter continued: “Based upon the evidence gathered to this point, we have concluded the employees are an ongoing and serious risk to the House of Representatives, possibly threatening the integrity of our information systems.” 

Imran, Abid, Jamal, Alvi and a friend were banned from the House network the same day Kiko sent the letter.

Imran wasn’t arrested until July 2017, when he tried to leave the country and was taken into custody at Dulles airport. His lawyer is Chris Gowen, a former aide to Hillary Clinton.  

Wasserman Schultz kept paying Awan after he was banned from Congress. A Capitol Police report shows that in April 2016, Imran left a laptop with the username RepDWS in a Capitol Hill phone booth late at night, and it was taken by police. 

Police said they needed it as evidence, but Wasserman Schultz pledged “consequences” for the police chief. Wasserman Schultz’ brother, a prosecutor in the D.C. US Attorney’s office, has tweeted about the case under the handle “fedpros.” 

Gowen said he felt “very strongly” that the RepDWS laptop should not be examined, and prosecutors never publicly challenged that request. 

No one else connected to Imran that was banned from the House has been charged, yet the House has not re-instated them. Imran, Hina, Abid and Jamal have also shared IT duties with Haseeb Rana, former McDonalds worker Rao Abbas and Nataliia Sova, a Ukrainian who is married to Abid. 

House officials told TheDCNF that the vast majority of evidence about misconduct allegations on Capitol Hill — including $120,000 in missing equipment from the office of Yvette Clarke — is actually against Abid, not Imran. 

Capitol Hill officials involved in oversight of the case previously told TheDCNF that the reason the DOJ was not pursuing the case was because the Democrats were refusing to press charges.

In an incredible sweetheart plea deal, Imran Awan – a former IT aide to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and other congressional Democrats – pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of making a false statement on a home equity loan.

Shockingly, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia issued a news release about Awan’s plea agreement that made no mention of his IT work for Democrats in Congress, no mention of Wasserman Schultz, and made his case sound like a minor local criminal matter of little interest to anyone. It was headlined: “Virginia Man Pleads Guilty to Making False Statement on Application for Home Equity Loan.”Ho-hum, right? Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. 

Even on the simple theft of government equipment there is a lot there for prosecutors. One of Awan’s former tenants, a retired U.S. Marine, even found and turned over to authorities several computers and smart phones with government markings on them that he found in Awan’s rental property. 

There is also internal U.S. House of Representatives’ paperwork detailing some of what went on in the offices Awan and his associates who did contract IT work for congressional Democrats. 

Internal House Inspector General findings have also determined that Awan copied the emails of up to 44 Democratic House members and other personal data and backed them up to a server that reportedly went missing and to a Dropbox account. 

Awan, his wife and other relatives and friends were also all paid exorbitant salaries for working as IT contractors for members of Congress for years – even though many of them didn’t have any expertise in IT and even though they didn’t undergo background checks. 

It is also likely that a few of Awan’s associates didn't even show up to earn all the money they were paid. Still, no charges have been filed against Awan or his brothers relating to alleged thefts, possible espionage and for providing false information (an image of the Democratic House Caucus computer server) to Capitol Police.

It is actually very hard to sum-up all that this group of IT aides (who are almost all from Pakistan) did and the crimes they might have committed. 

Writing a book on the topic was like piecing together an international spy thriller filled with anonymous sources, encrypted conversations, off-the-record meetings, foreign documents and hard facts from various court filings and from internal investigations in the House. 

What is clear to me, after interviewing so many people, is there is a lot of evidence here for investigators, but also a lot of political reasons why they might want this case to go away. 

Awan was even Wasserman Schultz’s IT aide when she headed the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which incidentally was when the DNC was hacked and the information given to Wikileaks. 

I have no evidence that Awan was in any way responsible for the leak. Still, it is incredible how much of all this interconnects circumstantially. 

Real court scenes (when Awan pleaded guilty and waved his right to a trial by jury), possible depositions of House staffers and members of Congress, and the investigations that would take place if the Justice Department pursued additional charges would have necessarily dug into a lot of things the Washington establishment would rather not deal with publicly. It also would have forced investigators to follow the trail to Pakistan. 

Still, I didn’t think these investigating agencies would be brazen enough to agree to this kind of a sweetheart deal for Imran Awan and wife, Hina Alvi.  Now Awan will not face prosecution where the more serious allegations against him can be judged.

What’s the big deal?

1. Outside of the quaint idea that justice should be equal – even for members of Congress, their staffers and contractors – there are a lot of problems inherent in covering up this multifaceted case.
   
2. Foreign intelligence agencies must have noticed how easy it was for the Awans to get access to the date and emails of so many members of Congress.
   
3. The slap on the wrist that Awan received hardly acts as a deterrent to those who’d like to know what members of Congress are saying behind closed doors.
   
4. As any computer security professional will tell you, the weakest part of any system is people. Security won’t be taken seriously if no one pays a price for allowing massive security breaches in Congress.
   
5. President Trump’s tweets related to this case were even used as a rationale by Judge Chutkan to let Awan walk out of the courtroom with only three months supervised release.
   
6. If there is one takeaway right now it’s that the Trump administration should demand an investigation by the Office of Inspector General into how this plea deal was made. The IG should also look into what actually happened in Congress. This case offers the president the opportunity to expose the swamp to the American people.
   
   By covering this up, the establishment has left a lot to come out that will embarrass Congress, the mainstream media and the Justice Department.

Jeremy Bird, the national field director for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, specializes in the revolutionary tactics infamously pioneered by radical community organizer Saul Alinsky.

Jeremy Bird is largely known for his 2012 campaign role, where he was central to building what he described as “the strongest grassroots organization in the history of American presidential politics.”

He explained Obama’s 2012 re-election infrastructure, aptly titled Organizing for America, had 631 offices in swing states alone, compared to challenger Mitt Romney’s 282.

According to Politico, Obama’s grassroots network — led by 270 Strategies’ Bird and Mitch Stewart — encompassed “10,000 neighborhood team leaders, 30,000 core team members and 2 million volunteers.”

Bird’s re-election team reportedly utilized publicly available information on voters, collecting as many as “500 data points on a single voter, from his reading habits to his opinions on the economy,” according to a 2013 Bloomberg profile.

The American Conservative Union (ACU) and its signature event, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) are heading in a more conservative direction, ACU's new chairman Matt Schlapp told Matthew Boyle of Breitbart News.

The primary theme for CPAC 2015 is “Conservative Action Starts Here.” He referenced how Breitbart News and other conservatives held, at CPAC 2013 and CPAC 2014, panels called “The Uninvited”and “The Uninvited II,” because of a lack of focus on social and national security issues at CPAC those years.

The more the donors learn about Gov. Christie—the more they are questioning his fitness for higher office.

“He hurt himself with that group. No doubt about it,” said Morton Klein, president of Zionist Organization of America. He was in the front row for Christie’s talk on Saturday and spoke to me on Tuesday morning. Klein is hugely influential in  pro-Israel circles and phones his longtime friend, Sheldon Adelson, every week or so to talk about Israel and American politics. Klein described his private encounter with Christie (described below) as “really unpleasant, condescending, rude, dismissive. [Christie] was bullying me. I’ve never had a politician speak to me that way.”

Klein talked to many of the major donors in the room and, he said, nearly every one had the same reaction. “They said ‘I never realized that Christie wasn’t a friend on Israel,’ it was a shock, a surprise.”

The media missed important aspects of the story—the very elements that are absorbing the attention of many Republican donors. While they were leaning toward Gov. Christie before his Saturday speech, now they are questioning his grasp of key issues, his stands and, most tellingly, his temperament and his character.

Christie’s Prepared Remarks Didn’t Mention Israel. Gov. Christie’s prepared remarks to a Republican Jewish Coalition meeting didn’t include any significant mention of Israel. Imagine a politician speaking to an African-American audience and not planning to mention civil rights or a chamber of commerce and not writing in a few lines about the economy.

Still, the speech has a hit and should have positioned the tough-talking former prosecutor for a presidential run in 2016. His speech even had a pitch-perfect sound bite: “We cannot have a world where our friends are unsure of whether we’ll be with them, and our enemies are unsure of whether we’ll be against them.”

The crowd thundered its approval. But that’s not the line that any one will remember.

Since the prepared speech was silent on Israel, it was the natural topic of questions from the audience. And that’s when Gov. Christie said the words that got him in trouble: “I took a helicopter ride from the occupied territories across and just felt personally how extraordinary that was to understand, the military risk that Israel faces every day.”

That phrase—“occupied territories”—set off murmurs in the crowd. “There was a buzz throughout the room,” Klein said.

“Most of the several hundred people in attendance noticeably gasped when Gov. Christie used the language of Israel’s enemies,” Klein told me. “Saying that territory captured in a defensive war [in 1967] in which its enemies sought its extinction is ‘occupied’ is designed solely to delegitimize the Jewish state’s claims to that land.”

The crowd’s reaction was predictable. “Occupied Territories” is not a neutral term for the land West of Jordan River, but a phrase used by radical Palestinian activists and others opposed to Israel’s identity as a Jewish state. The term doesn’t come from international law, but from partisan screeds. It is phrase that takes a side, not one that describes a place.  That’s why American diplomats, leaders and journalists generally avoid it. Instead they say “West Bank” or “Judea and Samaria” or similarly neutral formulations.

By using it, Klein said, Christie was signaling that he either was opposed to Israel or didn’t care enough to avoid the coded language of the anti-Israel crowd.

There is a third possibility that Klein didn’t consider. Like most state-wide office seekers, Christie has actively campaigned for votes among the growing Arab population of Passaic County, New Jersey (one of the largest in the country) and appointed prominent Muslim jurists to state government posts there. Among circles of Arab attorneys, the term “occupied territories” is widely used. Christie may have unconsciously picked it up among his supporters in Paterson, New Jersey.

Can NYC withstand a return to Dinkins-era weakness - in an era of Obama-enabled Islamism?

On the eve of the NYC mayoral election, polls show left-wing progressive Bill de Blasio with a huge lead over eading Republican Joe Lhota.  CNN'S Bryan Koenig writes:

According to an NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll released Monday morning, de Blasio has a 41-percentage point 65%-24% lead over Republican Joe Lhota among likely voters.

De Blasio, the city Public Advocate, has enjoyed the commanding lead virtually since he won the crowded Democratic primary in early September, edging out once-dueling frontrunners City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and scandal-plagued former Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Lhota, a businessman, deputy mayor under Republican Rudy Giuliani and former head of the New York City transit authority, has been unable to close the gap with attacks blasting de Blasio for a perceived lack of executive experience, being soft on crime and his seeming eagerness to tax the wealthy.

None of the attacks have stuck with voters, leaving de Blasio poised to be the first Democrat elected mayor of the heavily liberal-leaning city in nearly a quarter century. He's run by promoting the idea of a New Yorker split in two between the haves and have-nots, while attacking Lhota for "extreme" Republican ideology. 

The winner will succeed outgoing three-term independent Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Joe Lhota's criticised de Blasio's policies would drag NY back to the woes of Mayor David Dinkins days (columnist Michael Goodwin augmented in in "It's not divisive, it's the truth" in the NY Post) 10/20/13:

"When Mayor Rudy Giuliani took office in 1994, there were 1.1 million people on the (welfare) dole, including many full-time college students, and (previous Mayor David Dinkins’ team assumed the total would hit 1.5 million. They saw welfare as compassion and didn’t have a clue about its corrosive effects on families and the work ethic.

Giuliani knew better, and pushed for workfare and anti-fraud reforms that became part of the historic legislation President Bill Clinton signed. Mayor Bloomberg continues the approach, and now there are fewer than 400,000 city people getting welfare grants.  ... Joe Lhota is right to sound the alarm about a Mayor de Blasio, who is actually far more radical than Dinkins ever was. 

The attacks from the Dem goon squad are predictable, but more troubling is the silence of many people who know better. Terrified of de Blasio in City Hall, they are terrified to say so. They act as if they live in a police state, which is what they’ll deserve if they forfeit their right to pick a side.

Conditions under the liberal administrations of Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins' in the 1980's increased crime to 3 times the current rates.  In 1981, muggers robbing Bernhard Goetz, a NYC electronics entrepreneur, in a subway station left him with permanent injuries to his leg and torso. NYC authorities then denied his application for a pistol license, but he purchased one in Florida. which enabled him to stave-off another gang threatening to mug him on a subway 3-years later.  The  pre-Giuliani crime conditions which created the "subway vigilante" came back into focus since the Friday before the election, when for selling just $30 of marijuana to a lady decoy, Mr. Goetz was arrested and jailed overnight.

In the dystopian"It's DeBlasio Time," by Daniel Greenfield ("Sultan Knish"),  NYC returns to its bad old days under liberal governance- but this time with a soft-eye towards Islamic militantism under the multi-cultural, Mayor de Blasio. 

"Bill de Blasio promised that he would shut down surveillance of mosques. And he kept his word. And the terrorists kept theirs. They say ten thousand people died. But a hundred thousand were affected by the gas pouring through the subway tunnels all the way down to Times Square. Some of them may die. A lot of them have scarred lungs. 

President Clinton has promised that she will get those responsible. Meanwhile there are jets overhead and soldiers in the streets. They help keep down crime a little. But it's been a year now and Mayor de Blasio wishes they would leave. They're upsetting everyone in the mosque that the terrorists visited before they loaded up their canisters into backpacks and took the A train.

... Not even (de Blasio's) lack of singular achievements, his vague promises of income equality and his links to Communists have jeopardized his quest for City Hall whatsoever. Most of the public simply does not seem to be bothered by his unqualified status (as the nation as whole felt about Obama in 2008).  

It remains to be seen, of course, if de Blasio will be good for the city or not. But if he follows the path taken by his political idol, Obama, New York City may be facing some dire times ahead.

In a city with more than 2 million eligible voters, roughly 400,000 may cast ballots in this Tuesday's election.  More than 2 million people can vote for mayor of Los Angeles. But if history is a reliable guide, as many as 1.6 million of them will skip Tuesday's election.

Both mayoral candidates Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel have been engaged in negative advertising campaigns.  Watch and judge the candidates, excerpted from this group public debate filmed before the March primary by DemoCast at Congregation Beth Jacob in Beverly Hills.

Politicos join journalists to pay tribute to retiring cable-communicator and L.A. Councilman Bill Rosendahl at L.A. Press Club

Several of the candidates in this Tuesday's election were among the politicos who turned out at the L.A. Press Club on Thursday, 16 May to "Roast and Toast" the retiring Councilman Bill Rosendahl.  Mr. Rosendahl, a former cable executive and host, is credited with revitalizing the Club several years ago.  Organizer, Diana Ljungaeus, president of the Press Club, said, "We are forever grateful to Bill Rosendahl for kick-starting us (the Press Club) again." 


Councilman Dennis Zine extolled Bill Rosendahl for his public service and commented on how his struggle with spinal cancer has galvanized his fellow councilmembers.




Outgoing City Controller and Mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel roasted and toasted Councilman Rosendahl in this poignant speech.



Former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan called Mr. Rosendahl, "the conscience of the City Council." 



KNBC-TV journalist and anchorman called Mr. Rosendahl, "Oone of the most committed and one of the most passionate people - he really represents the people of the Westside- and the people of the Westside connect with him."




Councilman Tom LaBonge referenced one of his appearances on Bill Rosendahl's long-running, public-affairs program on public-access cable TV.



Former Assistant U.S. Attorney and Republican mayoral candidate in this election, Kevin James, spoke of their commonalities as homosexuals, civil-servants, and media hosts. Mr. James hosted a civic-activist, talk-radio show on 870KRLA.



Watch the full evening's Roast and Toast, including closing remarks from the honoree himself on his philosophies at this stage in his life. Mr. Rosendahl comments on what he feels are antiquated drug-laws affecting health and society.



Mr. Rosendahl told the gathered audience, "I know I'm only passing through this earth. I have said this since the beginning of my sensibilities about life and death. But you can't take anything with you, anyhow. . . . We're all in a hotel room, folks, and we check in, and we do check out."

Although mayoral candidate, Councilman Garcetti was not present, you can see him here in one of the mayoral debates which candidate Wendy Greuel had been kidding about.

Rush towards Palestinian statehood disregards 6-years of lessons following Israel's "disengagment" from Gush Katif, Gaza

To commemorate the 6th anniversary of Israel's 'disengagment' of Jews from Gaza, we seek to remind the world lessons to be learned from the exercise of giving Palestinians in Gaza the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to establish a free-republic in the absence of Israelis. Furthermore, how safe Israelis would be by withdrawing their defensive military presence from among Palestinians. This was to be the indicator of how safe Israelis would become by ceding Judea and Samaria for a Palestinian state with Gaza.

Unfortunately, Palestinian Gaza continues to demonstrate using their new border to advance their stated goal of conquering Israel. And if Israel were to withdraw from Judea and Samaria, Hamas would conquer the Palestinian Authority to continue the crusade to conquer the Jewish state. Why, then, after seeing Hamas demonstrate their true intentions for Israel, is the Obama Adminstration (or anyone else) lending credence to Palestinian Arabs' political initiatives for a sovereign state?  And is the Israeli government serious about ceding land to a Palestinian enemy, or just playing along?

The Cabinet voted Sunday to approve a 300 million shekel agreement that ends the claims for compensation by evacuees from Gush Katif and Northern Samaria.

The government stated that the agreement "will allow for the completion of the evacuees' moves to permanent communities and their embarking on a new path. All community representatives, business owners and farmers in Gush Katif 


The 300-million shekel ($87-million) agreement ends the claims for compensation by evacuees from Gush Katif and Northern Samaria.


Agriculturalists who had land in Gush Katif and have not yet received alternative land will receive additional compensation of 400,000 shekels or a monthly payment of 3,400 shekels for 13 years. Alternatively, they will eligible for agricultural land of up to 40 dunams (about 10 acres) in accordance with the previous rules.

Obama’s grand slam: Republicans fold as U.S. continues on path toward economic disaster

President Obama wanted three things from the debt-ceiling fight: trillions in new borrowing authority, status quo on spending and no more drama before his shot at re-election. He got everything.

Republicans in control of the House could have refused to raise the debt ceiling, but their leaders were afraid. They believed failing to raise the debt ceiling would lead to a default and a disastrous reduction in America’s credit rating.

So the leaders struck a final deal that will drive the nation’s debt up to $16.7 trillion, and rating agencies like Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s are poised to downgrade U.S. credit anyway.

GOP leaders claim they cut the best deal possible in a divided government.

“This is very important for our fiscal future, but it’s also important for the fact that our economy needs to get going,” House Speaker John A. Boehner said on Monday. “Beginning to take steps toward fixing our fiscal problems will, in fact, provide more confidence for employers in America.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Sunday night that the deal “will ensure significant cuts in Washington spending.”

That’s an exaggeration. The bill would cut a minuscule $7 billion in 2012 and $3 billion total in 2013 - the only enforceable years. Meanwhile, the nation will continue to borrow at a rate of $100 billion a month.

The second tranche of “cuts” will be left up to a new bipartisan committee tasked with finding up to $1.5 trillion in savings. There are a bunch of gimmicks involved, but essentially we’re supposed to believe that even though Congress can’t cut a days’ worth of spending now, it’s somehow going to have the fortitude to reduce spending by far greater amounts down the road.

More than 5,000 Attend CUFI’s Sixth Annual Washington Summit
America’s largest pro-Israel organization approaches three-quarters of a million members

Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the nation’s largest pro-Israel organization, held its sixth annual Washington Summit last week. With over 5,000 individuals in attendance, the three day event was the group’s largest in its six year history. The Summit included a series of educational sessions, speeches from prominent pro-Israel national and international figures, and a live satellite address from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

 

The Summit’s Night to Honor Israel featured remarks from Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, CUFI Founder and chairman Pastor John Hagee and a keynote address from national radio and television personality Glenn Beck.

 

Beck gave an impassioned and stirring speech expressing steadfast support for Israel. “Each of us will be judged as a people and a nation by how we treat Israel,” he said.

 

And to the world’s anti-Semites Beck’s message was unequivocal, “If a despised regime has the right to kill Jews and frighten those who stand with them, I declare, count me a Jew and come for me first!  When we all stand together, when we all raise our hands, we change the world. They cannot kill all of us. Let us declare: I am a Jew.”

 

Following two days of pro-Israel education and advocacy-training, CUFI delegates went to Capitol Hill and held hundreds of meetings with their elected representatives in Washington, including with the Congressional leadership offices on both sides of the aisle in both houses.  The CUFI delegates asked their elected officials to oppose the unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state at the United Nations, and to support security aid to Israel and tougher sanctions against Iran. 

 

“It is imperative that the Christian community let their representatives in Washington know that our support for Israel is unwavering. Both Democrats and Republicans must be aware that we are absolutely committed to keeping the U.S.-Israel relationship strong, and ensuring that Israel has the resources, diplomatic support and borders necessary for its defense,” Hagee said.

 

During the conference the group also announced that it now has more than 725,000 members. In his remarks, Beck announced that he too would be joining the Christian Zionist group.

 

“Our growth has been exceptional and it continues unabated,” said David Brog, CUFI’s executive director. “The halls of the Congressional office buildings were crowded with CUFI activists waiting to meet with their elected leaders. I am extremely pleased both with the reception we received and the impact we are clearly having on the U.S. – Israel relationship.”

 

Christians United for Israel is the largest pro-Israel organization in the United States and one of the leading Christian grassroots movements in the world.
