The Normandy Lesson and the Middle East Delusion: How WWII’s lessons are ignored in today's appeasement of Iran and Hamas

The Munich Agreement was a pact signed on September 30, 1938, by Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, aimed at resolving the crisis over Germany's demand for the Sudetenland, a region of Czechoslovakia with a significant ethnic German population. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain also led the Conservative Party during this critical period. 

Ultimately failing to avert war, the D-Day invasion of France, which, marking the start of the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Western Europe, landed on June 6, 1944 - 5 years and 8 months later. 

On the 81st anniversary of D-Day, we honor the valor of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy, confronting the consequences of delayed action against tyranny. Their sacrifice underscores a timeless lesson: appeasement can embolden aggressors, making eventual confrontation more costly. Today, this lesson resonates as Israel faces threats from Hamas and Iran, and the United States navigates complex diplomatic engagements under President Donald Trump's administration. 

Here’s a breakdown:

Background Context: In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, pursued an aggressive expansionist policy, claiming to unite ethnic Germans into a greater German state.

Sudetenland: This border region of Czechoslovakia had a large German-speaking population. Hitler demanded its annexation, citing alleged mistreatment of Germans by the Czech government, and threatened war.

Appeasement: Britain and France, wary of another devastating war after World War I, followed a policy of appeasement, hoping to satisfy Hitler’s demands and maintain peace.

Key Players

Adolf Hitler (Germany): Sought to annex the Sudetenland as part of his broader goal to expand German territory.

Neville Chamberlain (UK): British Prime Minister, eager to avoid war, championed negotiation.

The Agreement

Date: Signed in the early hours of September 30, 1938, in Munich, Germany.

Terms:

Germany was allowed to annex the Sudetenland immediately.

The transfer began on October 1, 1938, and was to be completed by October 10, 1938.

An international commission would oversee further border adjustments and plebiscites if needed.

Britain and France agreed to this in exchange for Hitler’s promise to make no further territorial demands in Europe.

Consequences

Short-Term:

Germany occupied the Sudetenland, weakening Czechoslovakia’s defenses and economy. Tensions briefly eased, with Chamberlain hailed as a peacemaker by some.

Long-Term:

Betrayal of Czechoslovakia: The Czechs, not consulted, lost key territory, industrial resources, and fortifications, leaving them vulnerable.

Emboldened Hitler: Seeing appeasement as weakness, Hitler occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, violating the agreement.

Path to War: The failure of appeasement led to skepticism of diplomacy with Hitler. When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Britain and France declared war, marking the start of World War II.

Legacy: The Munich Agreement is now widely seen as a failed act of appeasement, a cautionary tale about conceding to aggressive demands.
  
The agreement delayed war but at the cost of Czechoslovakia’s sovereignty and regional stability.

It exposed the limits of appeasement, shaping future debates on how to confront authoritarian regimes.

 

Today in 2025, veterans and officials have attended memorial services in Normandy to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings. this report from Britain's ITV News.

A remembrance service was held at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, which was attended by the ever-dwindling number of surviving veterans in their late 90s and older, remembering the thousands who died that day. 

 

Nazi Germany declared its surrender to the Allied nations 11-months after the D-Day invasion. Thirteen weeks later (on August 15, 1945), Japan would surrender to the Allies - commemorated as V-J ("Victory over Japan") Day.

gathered on the 70th anniversary of D-Day, accompanied by their families and friends commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day on Friday, June 6, 2014at the 94th Aero Squadron in Van Nuys, California.  

Several veteran pilots, both of the European and Pacific theaters of operation, shared their experience and attitudes with us about defending liberty from imperialism. The veteran pilots retell their experiences and share perspective on confronting tyranny today.

Wilbur Richardson, a B-17 Ball-Turret Gunner, flew 30 missions in 79 days, and two of them on D-Day. During his 30th mission, the German Axis forces wounded the Air-Force gunner. A highly decorated WWII Combat veteran, he was awarded the Purple Heart and DFC / Distinguished Flying Cross just to list a couple. 

 

We asked whether he thought the U.S., Canadian, and British countries' sacrifices to save The West from authoritarian tyranny (then Japanese and Nazi German) was worth its cost. He also shares his perception about applying our defenses nowadays to the threats from imperialist Communism and Islamism.

Swiss-born educator, Mrs. Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, lived and worked in Kuwait and Libya. She raised issues about Islam and Sharia law in lectures back in the West. In an article, "Attempting to Appease Islamists by Enforcing Blasphemy Laws Will Only Make Europe More Dangerous" in The Federalist 10/30, Helen Raleigh wrote about the case that Austrian officials brought against her:

... the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld an Austrian woman’s conviction by an Austrian court for defaming Muhammad.

According to the court ruling, the woman in this case, Mrs. S., held several seminars, entitled “Basic Information on Islam” between 2008 to 2009. In these seminars, she made several statements regarding Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha (Islamic traditions hold that Aisha was six at the time of their marriage and nine at its consummation). An undercover journalist reported her comments to Austrian authorities.

 The Vienna Regional Criminal Court found her “guilty of publicly disparaging an object of veneration of a domestic church or religious society, namely Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, in a manner capable of arousing justified indignation.” Thus, she was convicted in 2011 of “disparaging religious doctrines pursuant to Article 188 of the Criminal Code concerning three statements.” She was ordered to “pay the costs of the proceedings and a day‑fine of 4 euros (EUR) for a period of 120 days (amounting to EUR 480 in total), which would result in sixty days’ imprisonment in the event of default.

Graeme Wood, a staff writer for The Atlantic wrote: If Europe believes enforcing blasphemy laws in order to suppress offensive speech is necessary for maintaining “religious peace,” it’s dead wrong. Blasphemy laws protect no one and certainly don’t maintain religious peace. They represent a disguised bigotry — the progressives in the EU don’t trust that Muslims are peace-loving and are capable of civil discourse without resorting to violence.”

Will de facto 'blasphemy laws' inhibit contesting Islamic imperialism's cultural hostilities in the West? Might they inhibit enforcing security precautions in public transportation and the workplace?

Q: What happened to you along your journey?

A:  Well, it's a journey that took ten years that began in in late 2009 it's like I said it's taken me a decade of my life fighting for free speech in Europe. I was convicted of denigration of religious teachings of a legally recognized religion in Austria which is effectively a blasphemy law for for asking a rhetorical question in a seminar that I gave back in 2008 asking what do you call the behavior of Muhammad the Prophet of Islam marrying a six-year-old and consummating the marriage when she was nine? The name girl's name was Aisha. What do you call it if not pedophilia? So it was a rhetorical question.

I was convicted of, like I said, denigration of religious teachings. I appealed and appealed and appealed all the way up to the Austrian Supreme Court. I lost all the way to the Supreme Court and after that I went to a supranational court called the European Court of Human Rights which is a sort of Supreme Court of Europe. And we lost again. I mean I lost again but when I lose everybody loses in Europe.

So now we have a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights which in effect says that the Muslims right not to be offended is greater than my right to free speech.

Q:  But what was it that was that you said wasn't false?

A:  Well, it wasn't wasn't slander well according to Islamic law it was slander of course so it was - it's a strange situation because the Austrian legal system sort of became the arbiter for Islamic law it was a Sharia ruling in effect because you have you had the entire Islamic world rejoicing after the verdict was passed down so that's that's actually proof that it's it's Sharia law and that Sharia slander laws were upheld by the European Court and it, you know, the irony is you didn't even need any Muslim complaint about what I'd said back in 2008 and 9, but rather you had a secular government take over and do the job and they did it very well.

Q:  What does that signal to free people, free societies around the world?

A:  Do you remember what Mohammed Atta's said when he hijacked the plane that went into the World Trade Center? One of the planes he said "if you remain quiet everything will be okay?" That's exactly what it is my court case signals to non-Muslims. You need to remain quiet and not talk about
Islam in any slanderous way and then everything will be all right. So this is a terrible terrible sign and there are so many people already silenced because of that.

Q:  But you made a religious criticism what about criticisms of Islamism and and the actions that either Muslims or the politicians who facilitate Islamism in those kind of criticisms are those also now taboo?

A: Well, you know, I don't subscribe to the distinction between Islam and Islamism. I don't belong to this group that distinguishes it. Any criticism is taboo whether it's Islam or Islamism, you must not criticize the religion of Islam or anything associated with it. And that's the problem. If you can't you can't name the enemy and obviously the Red-Green Axis that we just heard about for most of the day,  the Red-Green axis between the Socialists and the- I would call it Muslims - I would say Quran-abiding Muslims - okay, that's a distinction I would make.

Q:  Who are trying to spread Islam as a political force?


A:  Well, I mean there's no difference in Islam between religion and politics. It's all the same. It's a distinction that we as non-Muslims make. But they have won. And that's that's a tragedy. They won that case. We lost we lost massively.  The first thing I said after I heard the verdict - I apologized to my daughter because I want her to grow up as a free person and she no longer is a free person. And the second thing, you know, I will no longer speak publicly in Europe - in all of Europe - in the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights. So I am now moving, I'm shifting my focus to the United States -  to help Americans realize that your protection is the First Amendment. You need to protect your Constitution and your First Amendment.  It's the bullwark of free speech. We (Europeans) don't have anything like that. There's nothing like it in the entire planet.

Lawyer, Judith Bergman, wrote in "Denmark: How to Deal with Integration" in Gatestone Institute, August 20, 2019

The Integration Barometer -- which measures the degree of assimilation in the municipality among young people with a non-Western background -- showed that almost one third of 18-29 year-olds (31%) believe that "religious and cultural laws must be adhered to, even though they may be contrary to [Danish] law."  The issue, then, is whether these young people believe that Islamic sharia law should take precedence over Danish law.... The Imam Ali Mosque's refusal to distance itself from the problematic imam, exemplifies the difficulties with which Western societies are struggling: How does a society deal with religious institutions that profess values, which are the very opposite of the value system of the Western society in which they live? In observance of the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, President Donald Trump has declared Friday through Sunday of this week to be "Days of Prayer and Remembrance," and Monday to be "Patriot Day."

A revealing conversation with L.A. millenial actress, Grace Bannon, visiting the 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center in 2014- about what her generation has been taught about jihadism- and what the 9/11 Memorial Museum teaches (or doesn't) about the threats against democracy from it.

"During National Days of Prayer and Remembrance, our Nation recalls the nearly 3,000 innocent people murdered on September 11, 2001. As we reflect on our sorrow and our grief, we come together to pray for those who lost loved ones," Trump said. "As a Nation, we pray that the love of God and the comfort of knowing that those who perished are forever remembered brings them peace and gives them courage."In Trump's declaration that Friday through Sunday be dedicated to prayer and remembrance of those who died in the attacks, the president referred to the "Survivor Tree" at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan.

The Survivor Tree,  a Callery pear tree, was discovered in the days following the attacks with "snapped roots and burned and broken branches," according to the memorial website. The tree was placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, rehabilitated, and later returned to the memorial in 2010.

Monday, Sept. 11, in accordance with a 2001 law, will be Patriot Day in tribute to those who died in the attacks, and also to first responders and members of the American armed forces. (source)

Ralph Peters writes in the New York Post:

"Israel's airstrikes against confirmed Hamas terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip were overdue, discriminating and skillful. So far, this retaliatory campaign has been a superb example of how to employ postmodern airpower.

Israel's attack aircraft appear to have accomplished that part of the mission. As I write, some 300 terrorist dead have been reported in Gaza, while the propaganda-savvy information office of Hamas has struggled to prove that 20 civilians died.

Given the fact that Hamas adheres to the terrorist practice of locating command sites, arsenals and training facilities in heavily populated areas, the results suggest that the IDF - supported by first-rate intelligence work - may have executed the most accurate wave of airstrikes in history, with a 15-to-1 terrorist-to-civilian kill ratio.

The bad news is that it still won't be enough. While Israel has delivered a painful blow against Hamas, it's still not a paralyzing hit. The only way to neuter such a terror threat - even temporarily - is to go in on the ground and scour every room, basement and underground tunnel in a region.

That would mean high Israeli casualties and, of course, condemnation of Israel's self-defense efforts by every self-righteous, corrupt and bigoted organization and government on earth, from Turtle Bay to Tehran.

What have been Israel's "crimes?" Not "stealing Palestinian land," but making that land productive, while exposing the incompetence and sloth of Arab culture.

Israel's crime isn't striking back at terror, but demonstrating, year after year, that a country in the Middle East can be governed without resort to terror. Israel's crime hasn't been denying Arab rights, but insisting on human rights for women and minorities.

Israel's crime has been making democracy work where tyranny prevailed for 5,000 years. Israel's crime has been survival against overwhelming odds, while legions of Arab nationalists, Islamist extremists and Western leftists want every Jew dead.

But Israel's greatest crime was to expose the global cult of victimhood, to prove that hard work, fortitude and courage could overcome even history's grimmest disaster."

We may sympathize with the average Palestinian family, exploited by generations of corrupt leaders and now caught in yet another round of violence. But let us never forget that Israel hasn't fired thousands of blind rockets into Palestinian cities, that Israeli suicide bombers don't attack Arab restaurants and bus stops, and that Israel seeks to avoid harming civilians - while Hamas seeks to kill as many civilians as possible.

In a world where there are no good answers, Israel just answered as best it could. The world's response? "How dare Jews defend themselves."

Humanity doesn't progress. It just changes clothes."

While the UN and much of Europe wring their hands at the heavy Israeli response to rocket fire by the Palestinians into Israel, there is talk of ‘disproportionate response.’

The Israelis are entitled to defend themselves from those who openly or not so openly call for their annihilation.

Global analysts anticipate fiercer, broader Jihad war & infiltration under prospect of Obama presidency

The prospects for an Obama presidency (blogs the Daily Mail's, Don Surber) has international newspaper columnists worried.

Add Greg Sheridan, foreign editor of the Australian, to the list of members of the foreign press who worry about a President Obama.

In a column in the Australian, “This is no time for a celebrity in the Oval Office,” Sheridan reasoned that far from calming the Middle East, a President Obama might trigger a a new Middle East war.

Sheridan joins Gerard Baker of the Times of London and Gabor Steingart of Der Spiegel in warning Americans that this is not Amateur Hour when it comes to foreign policy.

The civilized world looks to America for leadership and intestinal fortitude when it comes to standing up to evil — not fealty and Kumbaya when dealing with tyranny in the world. Heed the warning.

"There's no formal offer of help from Minister Farrakhan that would involve me rejecting it. But if the word "reject" Senator Clinton feels is stronger than the word "denounce," then I'm happy to concede the point, and I would reject and denounce." 

This is the part everyone notices. It's hilarious. We love him. And she now seems ridiculous. Come back up for air, Hillary! Fight it! He gave you an opening! Point out where he failed.

CLINTON: "Good. Good. "

Excellent. Astounding! Hillary Clinton does not have the instinct for blood. She either gave up or she lacks the chops to keep up with him.

On March 9, 1916, Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa attacked the border town of Columbus, N.M., killing 18 Americans.

President Woodrow Wilson ordered Gen. John J. Pershing and 10,000 soldiers into Mexico for nearly a year to hunt Villa down, in what was explicitly called a "punitive expedition." Pershing never found Villa, making the effort something of a failure.
