"Red-Green Axis" – How Communists and Islamists Are Undermining America from Within

Karen Siegemund, Frank Gaffney, Robert Spencer, Trevor Loudon at Amer. Freedom Alliance

The American Freedom Alliance (AFA) convened a high-stakes panel discussion exploring the mounting convergence between global communism and radical Islam — what was called the “Red-Green Axis: Communism and Islam United to Conquer the West." Held in Los Angeles, the forum was moderated by AFA's President Karen Siegemund and featured national security stalwart Frank Gaffney, Islamic extremism expert Robert Spencer, and anti-communist author Trevor Loudon.

The panel’s purpose was to diagnose how Islamist and Marxist-totalitarian movements are exploiting open societies—especially in the West—to advance authoritarian goals from within. While the event was red meat for conservatives, it aimed to illuminate for liberals and centrists the ideological absolutism threatening American values of freedom and pluralism. (Full panel video is posted courtesy of A.F.A.).

Moderator, Karen Siegemund: America at War with Itself

Dr. Karen Siegemund, A.F.A. panel moderator
Dr. Siegemund framed the evening by emphasizing that the culture war is more than a metaphor—“our way of life is under siege,” she said. Referencing a prior AFA event on Israel’s role in American national security, Siegemund made clear that the current domestic destabilization parallels foreign conflicts. She warned of rising political actors like Zohran Mamdani in New York, representing the Red-Green synthesis of “anti-Semitic, pro-Palestinian, and socialist agendas.” Her goal: mobilize attendees to understand the depth of the threat and become “miracle-worthy” defenders of Western civilization.

Frank Gaffney: The Totalitarian Trifecta

Frank Gaffney of Center for
Security Policy in D.C.
Gaffney extended the Red-Green metaphor into a “totalitarian trifecta”—Red (communists), Green (Sharia supremacists), and Blue (globalists). He warned that these factions, while divergent in end goals, are united in their immediate mission: undermining the United States. “Each envisions running everything,” Gaffney noted. He accused American leadership of aiding this subversion, especially by denying Israel support to neutralize Iranian aggression, and failing to recognize the infiltration of U.S. borders by Chinese soldiers and jihadists.

Gaffney: “We know that 70,000 to 100,000 Afghans brought in after Biden’s withdrawal were not the allies who fought with us. They were selected by the Taliban—and we let them in!”

Trevor Loudon: Communism in Religious Clothing

Author, Trevor Loudon
Mr. Loudon offered the ideological framework: “Communism is a religion pretending to be a political ideology. Islam is a political ideology pretending to be a religion.” He sharply criticized Donald Trump’s diplomatic instincts, arguing that no deals can be made with ideologues—only strength will deter them. Loudon traced how communist strategists in Moscow and Beijing have for a century used mass Muslim immigration to undermine the West, especially by allying with left-wing parties to dilute national identity and sow chaos.

Loudon: “Minnesota didn’t become a Muslim hub by accident. It was built by communists who knew Muslims would be a reliable wrecking ball against Western traditions.”

Robert Spencer: Sharks That Must Devour or Die

Robert Spencer, author, journalist
Spencer invoked a stark metaphor: both communism and Islam are “sharks” that must keep conquering or collapse. Drawing on Islamic doctrine, he described how Sharia is inherently expansionist and intolerant of equality with non-Muslims. He explained why Islamists and progressives find common cause: both seek authoritarian control enforced by terror. Spencer further warned that Muslim immigration to America—backed by political leftists—will result in the same ethnic-religious conflict now destroying European cities like Paris and Stockholm.

Spencer: “There has never been a society where large numbers of Muslims immigrated and didn’t attack the host culture. We will not be the first exception.”

What They Want You to See—And What’s Coming

The panelists cited current developments in Texas—like the proposed "Epic City" Islamic development in Plano—as examples of an emboldened Sharia movement inside America. They warned that Islamic centers are being deliberately placed in patriotic strongholds like Texas and Tennessee to shift electoral outcomes and cultural norms. When questioned why communists would align with religious hardliners, Spencer answered succinctly: “Communists think they can ride the tiger. But Islam has had 1,400 years of playing this game. They’ll eat the left when they’re done with us.”

Addressing Misguided Leftists and Moderates

Frank Gaffney and Karen Siegemund

For left-leaning audiences, the panelists posed this challenge: will the left continue defending ideologies that, once in power, outlaw LGBTQ rights, religious diversity, and women’s freedom? Will they remain oblivious to the fact that Islamists and communists hate liberalism at its core?

Siegemund: “It’s not Islamophobic to point out that Sharia law opposes the Constitution. Freedom of religion does not mean freedom to impose authoritarianism.”

Gaffney: “The quiet ones among Muslims are often just trying to stay alive. Apostasy is punishable by death. That’s why you don’t hear from them.”

Conclusion

The panel concluded not in despair but in resolve: America can only survive this ideological siege if it reclaims faith in its own traditions—Judeo-Christian ethics, constitutional government, and national sovereignty. Each speaker emphasized the need for political courage, civic education, and a rejection of false multiculturalism that excuses ideological subversion.

Trevor Loudon: “We need to have faith that we’re on the right side of history—and act like it!”

Recognizing Marxism and Communism - Dr. Bradley Thayer at A.F.A. 3-part Forum Series

Dr. Bradley Thayer & Dr. Karen Siegemund at American
Freedom Alliances' "The War on Practically Everybody"

At American Freedom Alliances' "The War on Practically Everybody" in Los Angeles, Dr. Karen Siegemund and Dr. Bradley Thayer (a Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Policy) discuss the influence of Marxist ideas on American politics, specifically within the Democratic Party. They argue that this ideology, which seeks to undermine traditional democratic political identity, has been spread through popular culture, literature, and Hollywood.

Drs. Thayer and Siegemund explain that this is not just a feminist issue but a deeply Marxist one, with the feminist movement being a part of the broader Marxist movement. Dr. Thayer also discusses the evolution of Communism from Marx's ideas to the broader movement we see today, including in the Democratic Party.

The speakers argue that Communism's core ideas include the employment of class as a tool to study history and the intent to overthrow middle-class life and democratic politics. Thayer also mentions key individuals like Lenin, Stalin, and Mao Zedong who added to the movement's ideology.

Dr. Thayer expresses concern over the human rights abuses and potential collusion between the Chinese government and US public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic. He calls for transparency and accountability and warn of the tactics Communists use to undermine freedoms. He also discusses the challenges of spreading information and alternative narratives, particularly regarding the Chinese Communist Party, and the importance of individuals becoming critical thinkers.

The conversation then shifts to national security issues, including the large number of military-age men entering the United States from countries like China and Iran, who may be acting as agents of terrorism and committing sabotage, assassinations, and election interference. Thayer argues that this issue is not being recognized or understood as a major political issue but could lead to domestic terrorism and a "cyber Pearl Harbor" attack. He emphasizes the importance of individual political participation and engagement to counteract potential government-inflicted problems.

How the Left evolves Marxism through cultural institutions - at A.F.A.'s "The long-march through the institutions" conference

Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" set the tone for partisan news towards imposing liberal cultural hegemony. Others included Saturday Night Live, HBO's Real-Time with Bill Maher, and ABC's The View. Ultimately, all 3 US TV network nightly talk shows followed suit - bashing Pres.Trump and denigrating supporters of him, while advocating for far-left politicians.

We all know of Karl Marx's cry "Workers of the World, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains!" But the fact is, his exhortation was essentially ignored by those workers who were, frankly, pretty okay with the unprecedented prosperity and opportunity that came with free market capitalism.

So Marxists turned to something new to bring about the revolution they so desperately wanted.

Thus came about "The Long March Through the Institutions," an expression coined by Rudi Dutschke to encapsulate the strategy described by Antonio Gramsci: take over every one of our government and civic institutions, and wreck it from within.  Dutschke built on Gramsci's writings by proposing a long march through the cultural institutions of society - the church, entertainment, civil service, educational faculties, family institutions and marriage - to replace the dominant culture and replace it with revolutionary, cultural Marxism. (Source: Unconstrained Analytics 6/5/19)

Father James Thornton wrote: "Gramsci's Grand Plan," in the New American, July 1999:
Gramsci theorized that if Communism achieved "mastery of human consciousness," then concentration camps and mass murder would be unnecessary. Mastery over the consciousness of the great mass of people could be attained if Communists or their sympathizers gained control of the organs of culture — churches, education, newspapers, magazines, the electronic media, literature, music, the visual arts, and so on. By winning "cultural hegemony," Communism would control the deepest wellsprings of human thought and imagination. One need not control all information itself if one can gain control over the minds that assimilate that information. Under such conditions, opposition would disappear since men are no longer capable of grasping the arguments of Marxism's opponents.
And that's exactly what's happened. Those institutions and pillars of Western Civilization that contribute to its unprecedented successes have been and continue to be under attack.

Karen Siegemund, American Freedom Alliance's
Executive Director at the Conference
At American Freedom Alliance's conference in Los Angeles in May entitled "The Long March Through the Institutions: The Left's Revolution by Other Means," Unconstrained Analytics' Richard Higgins and Stephen Coughlin explained the Democrats' implementation of this.

LGBT, Log Cabin Republicans are proud to differ from "straight-ness" and "wokeness" at L.A. Pride Festival

Beginning with the Dyke Rally and March, the L.A. Pride Festival 2019 bore the marks of leftist-political collectivism among the West Hollywood politicians and Christopher Street West organizers. Josh Herr, President of Log Cabin (LGBT) Republicans of Los Angeles described the group and their experience at the L.A. Gay Pride Fest, June 10, '18.

"Face It, Gays: Trump Is Our Friend" by David Benkoff in The Daily Caller May 5, 2018

"...Despite serious pressure from the president’s Evangelical allies, his long-anticipated executive order on religious liberty contained no license to discriminate against gays. As it had in January, the administration considered, then rejected, provisions to allow individuals and organizations to treat gays shabbily as long as they had a religious excuse.

But President Trump rejected the anti-gay language, throwing Evangelicals but a few crumbs facilitating church endorsements of candidates (which few of them want to do) and letting religious organizations decline to cover contraceptives (which gays do not use).

But LGBT Americans have now twice escaped such draconian measures, almost certainly because Trump and several members of his inner circle are sympathetic to gay concerns. More comfortable with a presidential bogeyman, the gay community and its allies actually spread rumors an anti-gay order was imminent, but it never came.

… Not so gay organizations. They ignored the breathtaking news of a disaster averted, and lambasted the president without identifying a single specific harm. Some of their pretzel-y twists aimed at fearmongering were amusing. Here’s the LGBT Equality caucus: “We cannot trust that this order will be narrowly utilized to not directly harm our community.”

Of course, Big Gay is never going to honor Trump’s heroic defense of LGBT Americans.

With yesterday’s news, Trump continues to fulfill his campaign promise to be a real friend to LGBT people. As president, Trump has kept Obama’s rules barring companies doing federal work from discriminating against LGBT people. He retained Randy Berry, a diplomat whose mission is to protect gay people from persecution abroad. His work is particularly urgent in light of the lethal assault on the gay community of Chechnya –which Trump’s UN Ambassador Nikki Haley has vocally condemned.

Other examples of Trump’s friendly stance: HIV/AIDS programs have been spared the large cuts to the health budget; and Trump’s controversial executive order on refugees specifically stated that the United States should not admit those who would oppress Americans “of any sexual orientation.”

When asked to detail their objections to Trump, liberal gay activists have got nothing but mischaracterizations:

Trump’s rule on transgender bathrooms mandated nothing, but rather gave schools the flexibility to handle locally a complicated issue balancing privacy and dignity. If Trump’s stance on this is transphobic, then Obama was transphobic for the first 7.5 years of his presidency, when he had the precise policy Trump now has.

No, Vice President Mike Pence is not a raging homophobe. If anything, Trump has influenced Pence on gay issues rather than the other way around.

It’s true Trump has not backed gay marriage, but that issue is defunct. Questioning him on marriage is like asking Democrats about racial quotas for government jobs. The Supreme Court has ruled definitively on both, so “gotcha” queries only drive a wedge between the politician’s most fervent supporters and more broadly popular positions.

Given the political calculus, Trump’s friendship to the gay community is stunning and unprecedented. Imagine if Barack Obama rejected a labor movement priority because it lacked fairness and compassion. Well, Trump won 80 percent of the white Evangelical vote but only 14 percent of the LGBT vote – yet time after time he has bucked his supporters and abetted his detractors.

Auspiciously, Trump’s popularity among Evangelicals has actually narrowed their political agenda to our benefit. For years, conservative Christians focused on abortion but pursued a social agenda that included opposition to gay rights. But by remaining steadfastly pro-life while refusing to budge on basic inclusion of gay Americans, Trump has forced conservative Christians to mute their antagonism toward homosexuality. That, perhaps, is the greatest kindness Trump has done for the gay community, and it is perplexing that Big Gay continues to fight him.

From gold to dust - Californians consider alternatives to problematic, Democrat policies

Tim Draper's proposed partition of California into 3 states didn't make the November ballot  (photo: Legal Insurrection)

With 33-million residents, a growing number of illegal aliens over-burdening the social welfare systems, and large financial entitlement responsibilities, issues that California's next Governor must improve were explored at the American Freedom Alliance's "The destruction of California Conference" in August of last year.

Ms. Michael Lee Greer, the V.P. of American Freedom Alliance who writes at "Madder than Hell" explains the subjects that the group's conference "From Gold to Dust: The destruction of California" (20 Aug 2017) conference addressed.

She describes some of the expert speakers, which include Dr. Victor Davis Hanson, Sr. Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

American Freedom Alliance's Executive Director, Karen Siegemund, remarks on the need for the group's summer Conference to focus on "California: From Gold to Dust."

Classical scholar, Victor Davis Hanson, resides in Central California, educates at Stanford in Palo Alto, and addresses the political, economic, and cultural disparity between the liberal elites along the Pacific Coast and the rest of the state, 40 miles east of the coast.
