Chinese human-rights activists featured in documentarian Ben Klein's "The Exiles" respond to the Anthem Film Festival audience at FreedomFest

The Anthem Film Fest, held concomitant to FreedomFest last July, screened the documentary "The Exiles." In it, documentarian Christine Choy tracks down three exiled dissidents from the Tiananmen Square massacre, in order to find closure on an abandoned film she began shooting in 1989.  

Mr. Fengsuo Zhou, Chinese democracy and human-rights activist, was joined by Mrs. Li Schoolland and filmmaker Mr. Ben Klein to discuss the documentary 

In a post-screening panel joined by The Exiles' documentarian Ben Klein, exiled Chinese human-rights activists Mr. Fengsuo Zhou and Mrs. Li Zhao Schoolland shared experiences and insights from the Chinese democracy movement leading up to the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.

They discussed the importance of recognizing individual identity within the Chinese community, the connection between the 1989 protests and current resistance in China, and their efforts to support political prisoners. Mr. Zhou also shared stories of dissidents who have been separated from their loved ones for decades due to their activism. The speakers emphasized the need for financial support and media awareness to help political prisoners survive and potentially secure their early release.

They also discussed the Chinese military's strict control over information leading up to the massacre and China's influence on the current administration in the United States. They addressed the tense relationship between China and the United States, with Zhou expressing concerns about China's impact on American policy and society. Overall, the speakers highlighted the importance of international support in the fight for freedom and democracy in China.

Larry Elder switched to the Republican Party in 2003. Mr. Elder came along after months of refusal of the Republican Party to recognize him as a candidate.

The Democratic Party of governor, Gavin Newsom, endeavor to smear Mr. Elder as an extremist. They allege that his reign would be a challenge to the progressive movement in California and America. 

Mr. Newsom recounted Elder’s statements to argue “he’s even more extreme than Trump in many respects.” Elder said “Newsom is an "elite dictator" who "abused power" during the pandemic” (White & Marinucci, 2021).

While making a campaign stop in Venice Beach yesterday, a white Democrat woman clad in a gorilla-mask, flung a raw egg in an attempt to strike Mr. Elder.

On Monday, Melina Abdullah, the Farrakhan-praising, Black-Muslim co-founder of Black Lives Matter attempted to smear Mr. Elder as "A black face on white supremacy.” (Nightingale, 2021).

Mr. Elder is a decent man with peaceful mind who is opposes gun control and any minimum wage, believes climate change policies are not worth the cost. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (White & Marinucci, 2021).

During the reign of Gavin Newsom, there has been rapid increase in public disorder. Homelessness has reached every corner of the State (Eide, 2021).

In an interview question regarding homelessness and approach to housing, Mr. Elder explained that California housing has always been somewhat more expensive than in the rest of the country, because it has been a truly, great place to live.

But today, housing in California costs about 150% more than in the rest of the country. Fewer and fewer Californians can afford housing costs in their own state. Regulations and laws that benefit a select few have sent home prices soaring. I will repeal those perverse regulations.

One of the incumbent governor's campaign offers was to build 3.5 million new housing units by 2025. But where is the construction? We have builders eager to build for the large and growing population in California, but their hands are tied by unnecessary regulation.

Poor policy making in Sacramento has left our state ranking 49th in the union for the rate of construction. Why? Because, as is the case for gas prices, housing prices in California are being substantially and artificially inflated by meddling politicians in Sacramento. I (Larry Elder) will alleviate the housing crisis by letting the home builders build new homes!

The California College Republicans Chair says “I think that a lot of people were excited for the first time about Larry running.” (White & Marinucci, 2021)

Dr. Parsian concludes, "I believe that Larry Elder will be the governor California needs to restore balance to the state."

Yuri Bezmenov was a KGB agent who defected to the United States at the height of the Cold War from his diplomatic posting in India. After rising through the ranks of the KGB, he became disillusioned with the Russian workers'- utopia and fled India dressed as a hippie.

After several years working a variety of jobs in Canada under an assumed name, he agreed to an interview with G. Edward Griffin due to the danger that he saw within the USA. This was the danger of demoralisation and subversion of society by leftist Marxist elements.

Transcription from Useful Dissident 2008 G. Edward Griffin: Our conversation is with Mr. Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov. Mr. Bezmenov was born in 1939 in a suburb of Moscow. He was the son of a high-ranking Soviet army officer. He was educated in the elite schools inside the Soviet Union and became an expert in Indian culture and Indian languages. He had an outstanding career with Novosti, which was the—and still is, I should say—the press arm or the press agency of the Soviet Union; it turns out that this is also a front for the KGB. One of his interesting assignments was to brainwash foreign diplomats when they visited Moscow. And he’ll tell us a little bit about how they did this, and how they planted information which eventually wound up in the press of the free world. He escaped to the West in 1970, after becoming totally disgusted with the Soviet system, and he did this at great risk to his life. He certainly is one of the world’s outstanding experts on the subject of Soviet propaganda and disinformation and active measures. Mr. Bezmenov, I’d like to begin by having you tell us a little bit about some of your childhood memories.

Yuri Bezmenov: Well, the most vivid memory of my childhood was [the] second World War, or to be more precise, the end of the second World War, when all of a sudden [the] United States, from a friendly nation which helped us to defeat Nazism, turned overnight into a deadly enemy. And it was very shocking, because all [the] newspapers were trying to present an image of belligerent, aggressive American imperialism. Most of the things that we were taught [were] that [the] United States is [an] aggressive power which is just about to invade our beautiful, free socialist country; that [the] American CIA is dropping Colorado beetles on our beautiful potato fields to eliminate our crops, and each schoolboy had a picture of [a] Colorado bug on the back page of his notebook, and we were instructed to go into collective fields to search for those little Colorado bugs. Of course we couldn’t find any. Neither [could we] find many potatoes, and that was explained again by the encroachments of the decadent, imperialist power.

The anti-American paranoia [and] hysteria in the Soviet propaganda was of such a high degree that many less skeptical people (or less stubborn) would really believe that [the] United States is just about to invade our beautiful Motherland, and some secretly hoped that it [would] come true.

Griffin: That’s interesting. Well, getting back to life inside the Soviet Union, or inside Communist countries in general: In this country, at the university level primarily, we read and hear that the Soviet system is different from ours, but not that different. And that there is a convergence developing between all of the systems of the world, and that really it doesn’t make an awful lot of difference what system you live under because you have corruption and dishonesty and tyranny and all that sort of thing. From your personal experience, what is the difference between life under Communism and life in the United States?

Bezmenov: Well, life is obviously very much different for [the] simple reason that the Soviet Union is state capitalist economically. It’s a state capitalism, where an individual has absolutely no rights, no value; his life is nothing; it’s just like an insect. He is disposable. Where[as] in [the] United States even the worst criminal is treated as a human being, he has a fair trial, and some of them capitalize on their crimes; they publish their memoirs in their prisons, and get handsomely paid by your crazy publishers.

The differences of course in the daily life are very various, depending on who were are talking about. In my own private life, I never suffered from Communism, simply because I was brought up in a family of [a] high-ranking military officer. Most of the doors were open for me, most of my expenses were paid by the government, and I never had any troubles with the authorities or with the police. So, in other words, I would say I enjoyed, or I had good reasons to enjoy, all the advantages of [the] so-called ‘socialist’ system. My main motivations to defect had nothing to do with affluence. It was mainly moral indignation, moral protest: rebellion against the inhuman methods of the Soviet system.

Griffin: Well, specifically, what did you object to?

Bezmenov: I objected, first of all, [to the] oppression of my own dissidents and intellectuals, and that was the most disgusting thing that I witnessed as a young man, young student, who was brought up at [a] very troublesome period in our history, from Stalin to Khrushchev, from total tyranny and oppression to some kind of liberalization.

Discovery of Olympic-proportion: China discovers al Qaeda in its own backyard - Dr. Walid Phares in Counterterrorism Blog

In a video accusing China’s Communist Government of “mistreating Muslims” a Jihadi group threatened to attack the Summer Games in Beijin. A spokesman of the Turkistan Islamic Party accuses China of “forcing Muslims into atheism and destroying Islamic schools. The “Turkistan Islamic Party” is most likely based across the border in Pakistan, where sources affirm it received training from Al Qaeda.

Weeks ago the organization claimed responsibility for a bombings across the country. The latest video shows graphics of a burning Olympics logo and explosions. This week, attackers killed 16 police and wounded more than a dozen in the Xinjiang city of Kashgar using homemade bombs.


As China is discovering al Qaeda in its own backyard, this begs powerful questions:

1. If these Jihadists will escalate their Terror against Chinese cities and installations -and the recent discoveries indicate this trend- will Beijing find itself in the same trench as Washington that is against al Qaeda and the Salafists?

2. And if that becomes the case, will China continue to pursue a policy of support to other Jihadist forces, including the Islamist regime in Khartoum?

3. If Communism and Jihadism clash again in the 21st century inside the Asian superpower, will its resources rich Western province becomes a new Afghanistan with Jihadists converging from central Asia and other parts f the world?

For now Chinese officials are downplaying the danger altogether and dismissing the threat: "Those in Xinjiang pursuing separatism and sabotage are an extremely small number,” said a pro Government Uighur leader. “They may be Uighurs, but they can't represent Uighurs. They are the scum of the Uighurs," regional communist official Bekri said. But that is what Russian officials always said about Chechnya and their Indian counterparts argued about Kashmir. Jihadism has demonstrated that its adherents can swiftly recruit and expand, especially if international Wahabis are generous and committed. Hence the answer to this critical new “Jihad” will come from as far as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia but also from the smaller principality of Qatar, where al Jazeera can transform a local separatist movement into an uprising in the name of the Umma.
